Fifty percent of the work we do is Hedge Trimming. We work with Residential Homeowners and Commercial Strata’s in getting there Hedge’s trimmed and even some very large one’s too. Trimming your shrubs and hedges can be a quick and easy way to improve the appearance of your property.
Hedges are a popular ornamental feature in many residential and commercial landscape designs. Hedges may be of varying size, and may be seasonal or evergreen, but all of them need to be trimmed. These are a few reasons why it is important to trim your hedges.
Frequent Hedge Trimming is important for the health of your hedges. Trimming out dead or diseased parts of the plant will keep the hedge healthier while allowing new growth to proceed.
Privacy is one of the most common reasons that people plant hedges. Hedge Trimming your hedges properly will allow them to fill in completely and provide more privacy. Hedge Trimming away plant growth that is moving outward or upward allows the plants to fill in around the center.
Home value is an important consideration with many maintenance projects, and a well-maintained hedge can increase the value of a property when it is time to sell. Of course, the opposite is also true as a poorly trimmed hedge may detract from a home’s value.
Safety may not be the first thing that is considered when thinking about trimming hedges, but there are several ways that it does apply. Keeping taller hedges trimmed may reduce the chance of damage to buildings or vehicles during a storm by limiting the amount of dead wood that can be blown down. Hedges that are near driveways or streets need to be trimmed regularly to prevent them from growing to the point that they block the view of traffic. Hedges that are near walkways should be trimmed to prevent them from overgrowing the walking area and creating a hazardous situation.
Our knowledge allows us to not only provide quality hedge trimming but we can also diagnose issues, insect/disease problems, thinning/browning and in most cases offer in-house solutions. With Arborists on staff, our customers benefit from expert knowledge and exceptional customer service.

Non-flowering hedges like Laurel and Cedar Hedges should be trimmed more frequently. You should only trim as needed depending on their growth. If you live in BC with lots of rain where hedges grow quickly. You’ll want to trim them more frequently to keep their shape. Typically, this averages out to a hedge trimming at least twice a year, especially in Langley and the Fraser Valley area. Once Cedar hedges have lost shape they sometimes expertise and a lot of patience will be needed to get them back in shape.
For flowering hedges, you’ll want to get the hedge trimming done less frequently. It will depend on when they bloom. If your hedges bloom in the spring, wait until after they’ve fully bloomed. Why would you want to cut it before it flowers anyway? If your hedges bloom in the summer, then you can do the hedge trimming in the fall. After they bloom or in the spring as the growing season commences – just make sure it’s not right before they bloom.

Regular hedge trimming is essential for maintaining the overall appearance and health of your shrubs. Here’s why you should consider our hedge trimming services:
Did you know, that there is much more to hedge trimming than creating aesthetically trim to our trees and shrubs? Let’s dive in to some of our considerations:
When trimming hedges the angle of your cut is everything for both looks and plant health. A 10 degree angle is ideal for most hedges. This will:
Give you clean, even cuts for healthy growth
Improve water runoff and reduce fungal diseases
Let more light in to lower branches
To do this we hold our hedge trimmer at an angle as we go along the hedge. For manual shears, maintain that angle with each cut. Consistency is key to a uniform look.
One of the biggest problems with mature hedges is foliage loss at the base due to lack of sunlight. The tapered technique fixes this:
Trim the hedge narrower at the top than the bottom
Reduce the width by about one-third for every foot in height
This ‘A’ shape allows sunlight to get to the lower branches and promote fuller growth
For example if your hedge is 6 feet tall the top should be about 2 feet narrower than the bottom. This not only improves the health of the hedge but looks great too.
Interior pruning is often overlooked but is essential for healthy hedges. This involves:
Selectively removing some interior branches to improve airflow
Letting more light into the hedge’s core
Reducing disease and pest infestations
Use hand pruners or long reach pruning tools to remove about 10-20% of the interior growth. Target crossing branches, dead wood and areas of dense growth. Do this annually, preferably in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
Tool maintenance is crucial for preventing the spread of disease from plant to plant:
Clean tools thoroughly and routinely
Dry the tools thoroughly to prevent rust
Sharpen blades regularly for clean cuts
For powered trimmers the blades are cleaned routinely, with moving parts lubricated as per the manufacturer’s instructions. This not only prevents disease spread but also extends the life of your tools and makes trimming easier.
