  • Yes, you need a permit to remove a tree in Surrey. The city requires a Tree Cutting Permit for all tree removals for trees with 30 cm diameter at breast height, regardless of the tree’s location on private or city property. The following tree species require a tree permit regardless of size:

  • Arbutus (Arbutus menziesii)

  • Garry Oak (Quercus garryana)

  • Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)

  • Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)

  • Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum)

  • Maidenhair Tree (Ginkgo biloba)

  • All trees with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of at least 30 centimeters require a permit.

  • Certain tree species, regardless of size, such as Arbutus, Garry Oak, Coast Redwood, Dawn Redwood, Giant Redwood, and Maidenhair Tree, also require a permit

  • You need to submit a completed Tree Cutting Permit Application Form signed by the registered owner of the property.

  • If the tree is on the boundary of your property and your neighbor’s property, both owners must give consent by signing the application form.

  • You must provide at least three color photos of the tree, showing the whole tree, the defective part, and the area at a distance.

  • A printout of the tree location on the City of Surrey’s online mapping system (COSMOS) or a sketch is also required.

  • Additional documentation, such as an arborist report, may be necessary if you are applying for 5 or more trees or if specifically requested by the Trees and Landscape Section
